In September 1974 Maori Language week at Victoria University came to an end with a hui in the Maori room at the Dominion Museum. A number of Kaumatua, youth and representatives from various Wellington Maori organisations met to discuss the importance of the Maori Language in general and two questions in particular. Firstly, was the issue of bilingual schooling The Te Reo Maori Society proposed that in predominately Maori-speaking areas all Maori speaking children should have right to instruction in their official native language for three years of schooling. From then on schooling should be bi-lingual.
Secondly that a Central Maori Institute should be established in the Wellington region. This would aim to promote the Maori language and culture in the Wellington region and operate community schools for the general public with tutors being drawn from the Maori community.
