Protest Photos from the 1970s
March 21st is the anniversary of the “Sharpville Massacre” in South Africa in 1960. Police fired on a crowd of people killing or wounding 250 of them. It was one of the first and most violent demonstrations against apartheid.
Victoria University students took to the footpaths in Wellington in 1974 to remind citizens of the day as the New Zealand press ignored the anniversary and also ignored the activities organised by the Wellington Anti-Apartheid Committee to show solidarity with people of Black Africa
