An anti-apartheid protest in 1971 where a South African surf team event at Brighton Beach in Christchurch was disrupted by a crowd of protesters and Keith Duffield carrying a cross down the beach. Owen Wilkes wearing a scuba kit swum out in the ocean.

Murray Horton stated “The march was headed to a Christchurch beach to protest the presence of a South African surf lifesaving team. Owen later swam out and disrupted one of the races by moving the marker buoys, all the while dodging enraged race officials who rode after him, trying to grab him with a big boat hook”
